Building North of Ordinary
At True North General Contracting, we’re proud to serve communities across Thunder Bay and the surrounding regions. But working in Northern Ontario brings its own set of opportunities—and challenges—that make every job a little more complex and a lot more rewarding.
Here are just a few factors that make building in the North unique:
1. Seasonal Extremes
Construction timelines in the North revolve around the seasons. Deep frost, heavy snow, spring thaw, and even wildfire smoke can delay or complicate everything from excavation to final inspections. Our teams are experienced in planning ahead—using weather windows to our advantage and winterizing worksites when needed.
2. Remote Access & Transportation
Not every project is off-grid, but many are off-pavement. Narrow bush roads, water access properties, and fly-in communities like Pikangikum require creative logistics. Material delivery can take longer and cost more, and equipment access must be carefully coordinated. We’ve even brought in generators and built temporary roads to get the job done.
3. Soil & Site Conditions
From granite bedrock to clay and muskeg, the ground underfoot is never the same. Excavation often uncovers surprises, requiring real-time adjustments to foundation systems. Helical piles, engineered footings, or elevated framing platforms are often essential—and our crews are trained to pivot when the soil tells us to.
4. Energy Efficiency & Heating
In regions where temperatures plunge well below -30°C, energy efficiency isn’t a bonus—it’s a necessity. We prioritize proper insulation, air sealing, and heating system design to keep homes and buildings warm, safe, and efficient. Whether it’s electric, propane, pellet stove, or radiant heat, we help clients choose the right system for Northern living.
5. Local Codes & Indigenous Partnerships
We build to the Ontario Building Code and beyond—but working in Northern communities also requires cultural awareness, local permitting expertise, and, often, collaboration with Indigenous leadership. We’ve worked in remote First Nations communities, bringing both respect and craftsmanship to every site we step on.
6. Material Availability
Not all building materials are available locally, and certain products take longer to arrive—or cost more—once freight is factored in. We help clients make practical, durable material choices that suit the environment and the budget, while offering long-term value and low maintenance.
True North: Built for the North
We don’t just build in Northern Ontario—we build for it. Every beam, board, and screw is chosen with the local environment, lifestyle, and logistics in mind. Whether we’re framing a new home on the outskirts of Thunder Bay or finishing a workout facility in a fly-in community, our goal is the same: rugged reliability and Northern pride.
